Gorillaz's ninth studio album, The Mountain, is a concept record about life, death, grief, and reincarnation.
The Mountain as a Metaphor: Co-creator Jamie Hewlett described the mountain as a metaphor for human life. The bottom is wide with many green paths and opportunities, but as you climb higher, the path grows narrow until you reach the top and pass into what lies beyond—representing the cycle of reincarnation and the afterlife. The album's focus on mortality was heavily inspired by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett losing their fathers during its production.
Trips to India (specifically the citis of Jaipur and Varanasi) heavily influenced the record. Instead of treating death with pure sorrow, the album approaches it through Eastern philosophy and Hindu traditions (like samsara or rebirth) as a transition and celebration of the soul's journey.
