BOB DYLAN - SELF PORTRAIT. 24 track Double Vinyl. Catalogue Backfill. Due 6th November.

Released in 1970, Self Portrait combines original recordings with interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. Highlights include "All The Tired Horses," "The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo)," "Copper Kettle," and "Early Mornin' Rain.”

The album features four tracks taken directly from Bob Dylan’s (backed by The Band) performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31, 1969:

  • Like a Rolling Stone (Side B, Track 6)

  • The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo) (Side C, Track 5)

  • Minstrel Boy (Side D, Track 3)

  • She Belongs to Me (Side D, Track 4)

Bob Dylan at the time was purposefully retreating from his towering, pressurised role as the reluctant "spokesman of a generation" and the prophet of the 1960s counterculture. Having recently turned towards a smooth, crooning country style on Nashville Skyline (1969) and settled into domestic life away from the public eye, Dylan later admitted that Self Portrait was partly a deliberate "joke" or a way to dump a load of miscellaneous tracks and throw fans off his pedestal. The eclectic mix of pop standards, folk covers, instrumental whimsy (Wigwam), and soft crooning left contemporary critics and fans utterly bewildered—prompting Greil Marcus's famous Rolling Stone review opening, "What is this shit?"—though later reappraisals, such as 2013’s expanded archival release Another Self Portrait, reframed the record as a curious, subterranean exploration of traditional American song.
