Envy - Insomniac Doze: Anniversary edition, 2LP Indies exclusive Metallic Gold Vinyl
This is the 20th-anniversary vinyl reissue of the 2006 landmark post-hardcore/screamo album Insomniac Doze by the Japanese band, Envy.
in 2006, Japan’s envy irreparably blurred the lines dividing all the various sub-genres of underground rock, smearing post-hardcore, screamo, shoegaze, and ambient minimalism into their cinematic opus, Insomniac Doze. It was not a destination without a path – the band’s previous two albums, All the Footprints You’ve Left Behind and the Fear Expecting Ahead (2001) and A Dead Sinking Story (2003), were clear indicators that change was ahead. As always, envy were driven by creative curiosity and emotional exploration. Perhaps no album in their nearly four-decade history exemplifies this pursuit more than Insomniac Doze. Twenty years later, it stands as a progenitor, and one of the premier examples of the preconceptions of punk getting reduced to vapor.
To understand this album, think of how a movie soundtrack works. Imagine quiet, sleepy music playing slowly in the background (ambient minimalism). Suddenly, the music explodes with loud, shouting voices and crashing guitars (hardcore punk)
Insomniac Doze mixes these two styles. You get long, quiet stretches that slowly build tension, followed by loud, angry bursts of energy. The band blends rock instruments with slow, dreamy soundscapes.
The album has 7 songs and runs for about 58 minutes. The songs are very long. The longest song, "The Unknown Glow," is over 15 minutes long. The vocal style switches between whispered spoken words and raw, screaming agony.
