Depeche Mode's first album is Speak & Spell, released in October 1981. The album is highly notable as the band's only full-length release to feature founding member and primary songwriter Vince Clarke, who left to form bands like Yazoo and Erasure.

The record established the group in the British new wave scene and spawned several hit singles, most notably their classic track "Just Can't Get Enough", as well as "New Life" and "Dreaming of Me"
