Portishead - Dummy. 1LP on 180g Black Vinyl. 2017 Reissue.

Dummy is the 1994 debut studio album by the electronic band Portishead, from Bristol, widely recognised as a foundational masterwork that defined the trip-hop genre.

Instead of a traditional concept album, Dummy is a sonic exploration of atmosphere, mood, and raw emotion. It is characterized by several distinct elements -

The soundscape of Dummy is a dark, cinematic, and noir-inspired world. Created by producer Geoff Barrow and guitarist Adrian Utley, the album seamlessly blends hip-hop breakbeats, jazz samples, scratching, and heavy dub basslines with haunting, vintage tape loops. The band famously recorded their own instrumentals, pressed them to vinyl, and physically scratched or distressed the records to make the samples sound decades older than they actually were. This resulted in an eerie, crackling "hauntology" aesthetic.

Lyrically, the album delves heavily into themes of loneliness, romantic despair, isolation, and paranoia. Vocalist Beth Gibbons delivers these themes through a ghostly, fractured, and deeply emotional delivery. Her smoky, vulnerable voice captures a sense of "seductive misery," yearning for connection while navigating emotional collapse.

The music is deeply tied to the visual language of 1960s spy thrillers and psychological film noir. In fact, the iconic blue-tinted album cover features a still image of Beth Gibbons from To Kill a Dead Man, a 10-minute silent spy film that Portishead created and scored themselves just to establish the exact mood they wanted for the record.

All tracks recorded at State of Art and Coach House Studios, Bristol with additional mixing at Moles Studio, Bath.
